Voices of the homeland
We overheard some beautiful music during a sightseeing boat trip, which accompanied the plain flow of the river almost unnoticed. We learned quickly that The Vltava of Smetana is not only an iconic piece of the Czech nation, but is also an echo of the then already deaf musician who devoted his whole life to the music of his nation. Because, the river born at the confluence of two small streams, on the one hand, provides us with voices of hunts, of a wedding party dancing polka, of nighttime fairy tales and of the glorious past and legends of the castle of Vysehrad and the music, on the other hand, provides us with the composer’s life story full of struggle. What may the loyal student do now? Should he compose a symphony about his favourite steam engine?
Dvořák turned rather to birds and his eighth symphony drafted within only two and a half weeks in Vysoka heralds the solemn and joyful encounter with nature, success of which work was outmatched by the voice of his “New World” symphony only. Townspeople of the 19th century slowly turned away from this unpaired source of inspiration.
Chopin, beloved favourite of Parisian salons, was in grave fear of his own future, what would happen when his only remaining Polish soil that he had brought with himself in a chalice would dry out together with his own fantasy? The scent from the fields of home and the distinct dances of his own people are all there in the violin concerto in E minor, which was a farewell to his homeland.
To Ivett Gyöngyösi, winner of the “Junior Prima” Award, Chopin means “cream of the crop”, works of whom she has been playing and practicing since she was 11. Her first places on 3 Chopin Contests and numerous international awards mean more than a hopeful beginning already.
